La descarbonización de las navieras empieza por el hidrógeno verde y el e-metanol

Actualmente, la empresa danesa Maersk es la segunda naviera más grande del mundo, con más de 100.000 empleados, una cuota de mercado cercana al 20% y una flota de 750 cargueros. La industria del transporte marítimo lleva años siendo una de las más señaladas en cuanto a su cantidad de emisiones. Esto se debe a que, según el último estudio de la Organización Marítima Internacional (OMI), la industria es responsable de emitir más de 1.000 toneladas de CO2 cada año. En este estudio también se resalta como la contaminación generada puede duplicarse de aquí a 2050. Por esa razón, las grandes empresas del sector como Maersk han empezado a buscar soluciones sostenibles para descarbonizar su flota. Y una de las más prometedoras se encuentra en el e-metanol.

 

¿Qué es el e-metanol, el biocombustible que sustituirá al gasoil?

El e-metanol, o metanol verde, es un biocombustible que se fabrica a partir de energías renovables como pueden ser la biomasa o el hidrógeno verde obtenido a través de la electrólisis del agua. Hoy en día es usado como anticongelante y disolvente, pero también tiene un uso más interesante, como combustible. Su principal ventaja frente al gas natural licuado es que se permanece en estado líquido a temperatura ambiente, lo que facilita mucho su transporte al no depender de sistemas de aislamiento y almacenamiento especiales.

En cambio, su principal desventaja a día de hoy es su alto coste de producción, y por ende, de distribución. Por eso diversas organizaciones ecologistas y científicos no lo ven como una alternativa al petróleo. En los próximos 10 años, está previsto que el mercado mundial del e-metanol pase de 122 millones de dólares a más de 3.000 millones. Por esta razón, Maersk ha decidido apostar por la creación de este biocombustible en masa, y su principal hub energético quiere que sea España.

Maersk acuerda con el Gobierno de España una inversión de 10.000 millones de euros para producir e-metanol

Recientemente, la naviera danesa Maersk y el gobierno español acordaron la creación de un proyecto de inversión de 10.000 millones de euros para producir metanol verde en dos plantas situadas en Andalucía y Galicia. Este proyecto prevé crear más de 85.000 nuevos empleos cualificados y convertirá a Andalucía y Galicia en líderes mundiales de energías renovables. Estas dos plantas se suman a la lista prevista por la naviera danesa de 5 o 6 puntos estratégicos a nivel mundial de su estrategia renovable. Una de ellas será en Egipto, país con el que ya firmó un acuerdo Maersk en el mes de marzo.

El proyecto prevé la producción de 200.000 toneladas de e-metanol entre 2023 y 2025, un millón para 2027 y hasta dos millones para 2030. De toda la inversión acordada, el 60% se destinará a la creación de instalaciones para la producción de electricidad necesaria para obtener primero hidrógeno verde, y después el e-metanol. El resto se invertiría en las fábricas ya existentes. Esta situación puede provocar que el precio de la luz acabe disminuyendo en España en un futuro. El proyecto prevé contar con el apoyo de Europa gracias a los fondos europeos y contempla la creación de entre 20 y 80 nuevos parques eólicos o solares para la creación de hidrógeno verde.

El resto del mundo también se prepara para la transición energética al e-metanol

Además de la inversión en España, Maersk ya anunció en 2021 la inversión en una empresa estadounidense basada en el desarrollo de bioetanol verde. Empresas competidoras de Maersk también creen en el e-metanol como la principal alternativa al petróleo. Empresas como China Merchants y COSCO Shipping Bulks ya han anunciado que el metanol verde será su principal fuente de combustible para sus flotas. En Asia, Carbon Recycling International (CRI) inició la producción de la mayor planta mundial de conversión de CO2 en metanol.

 En Australia, la empresa Mitsubishi Gas Chemical plantea un proyecto de generación de metanol verde a través de la captura del dióxido de carbono de la producción de cemento. Otros proyectos se centran más en la optimización del proceso de creación del e-metanol, como por ejemplo el proyecto Laurelin. Impulsado por la UE y la Japan Science and Technology Agency, busca soluciones para mejorar la producción del metanol verde. Una se consigue a través de la hidrogenación de dióxido de carbono para mejorar la eficiencia energética y los costes de producción.

A tecnologia IATos poderia representar um marco na detecção de casos de Covid-19, já que o seu uso traz diversas vantagens:
