Por meio da análise dos anéis de crescimento de árvores é possível reconstruir como os fatores do clima oscilaram na cidade de São Paulo em certos períodos. Essa é a conclusão da pesquisa do biólogo Gustavo Burin Ferreira, do Instituto de Biociências (IB) da USP, que estudou 43 cedros do Instituto Butantan, do Parque da Cantareira e do próprio IB, entre 2007 e 2011, para conhecer mais sobre o passado climático da cidade.

A partir da análise das informações, Ferreira descobriu que o fator que mais se correlaciona com o crescimento das árvores estudadas é a temperatura no final do inverno: quanto maior ela é, menor é o crescimento. “Explicando de uma maneira simples e finalista, é como se a árvore ‘queimasse a largada’ e começasse o processo de crescimento antes da hora”, diz Ferreira.

Para estudar as árvores sem destruí-las, o pesquisador utilizou o trado de incremento, uma espécie de broca oca que retira amostras de madeira. A partir delas, é possível saber as medidas dos aneis de crescimento e confrontá-las com os dados já existentes sobre o clima na cidade. “Depois de remover tendências naturais de crescimento, o que estiver variando é causado por fatores que não estejam relacionados a estas tendências”, explica.

Ferreira afirma que o estudo prova que, apesar de difícil, é possível fazer esse tipo de análise em cidades. “Nas árvores urbanas, são muitos fatores envolvidos, como poluição e podas, entre outros. Isso pode mascarar alguns efeitos, além de abrir um grande leque de possibilidades. Mesmo assim, ainda é possível obter resultados.” Outro obstáculo encontrado na pesquisa foi a falta de dados sobre o clima da cidade, principalmente antes da década de 1960. Mapeamento em curso pelo IPT orientará investimentos para prevenção e controle de erosões e inundações em SP

O Departamento de Águas e Energia Elétrica (DAEE) está investindo R$ 1,35 milhão no cadastramento de pontos de erosão e de inundações no Estado de São Paulo. O trabalho é executado pelo Centro de Tecnologias Ambientais e Energéticas do Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas(IPT) e deverá ser concluído até dezembro deste ano.

A fase de mapeamento de pontos de erosão e de inundação em áreas urbanas já foi realizada a partir de imagens de satélite e de levantamentos pelo IPT, na década passada. No entanto, as regiões do Estado mais susceptíveis a inundações e processos erosivos de grande porte - conhecidas como boçorocas – tornaram-se objeto de um levantamento mais detalhado, com equipes se deslocando por terra para a coleta de informações.

Depois de estudar por quatro anos o processo evolutivo de diversificação de um grupo de anêmonas de tubo do Atlântico Sul, um grupo de pesquisadores da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) obteve um resultado inesperado: o estudo biológico acabou contribuindo para reforçar a teoria geológica de que, há cerca de 10 milhões de anos, a bacia Amazônica era ocupada por um mar interno que ligava o Caribe ao Uruguai.

O estudo, publicado na revista PLoS One, teve o objetivo inicial de identificar, por meio de análises genéticas e moleculares, em que momento da evolução ocorreu a diferenciação entre duas espécies de anêmonas de tubo do gênero Isarachnanthus, do grupo Ceriantharia presentes no oceano Atlântico.

Os resultados mostraram, no entanto, que o cenário mais provável para a diferenciação das duas espécies – e de uma terceira existente no oceano Pacífico – seria coerente com a chamada teoria da “rota marinha da Amazônia no Mioceno médio”.

Segundo essa teoria, um passagem marinha ligava o Caribe à região atual da costa do Uruguai, entre 9 milhões e 11 milhões de anos atrás, cortando ao meio o continente. A maior parte do Brasil atual, nesse período conhecido como Mioceno médio, teria sido uma ilha separada do resto da América do Sul por uma língua de oceano.

As Nações Unidas reagiram à alta no preço dos alimentos pedindo à comunidade internacional que tome medidas coordenadas para combater o problema.

Segundo a ONU, o mundo está registrando a terceira alta de preços em menos de cinco anos.

Medidas Rápidas

Em comunicado conjunto, a Organização para Agricultura e Alimentação, FAO, o Programa Mundial de Alimentos, PMA, e o Fundo Internacional para Desenvolvimento Agrícola, Ifad, sugeriram medidas rápidas para evitar uma crise alimentar, como a que ocorreu em 2008/09.

A alta do preços foi provocada, desta vez, pela seca nos Estados Unidos, elevando o valor cobrado pelo milho. Além disso há secas e cheias em outras partes do mundo, o que gerou um aumento de preços também do trigo e da soja.

Museu de Arqueologia e Paleontologia de Araraquara convida para conhecer arqueologia

Neste mês de setembro, o MAPA – Museu de Arqueologia e Paleontologia de Araraquara, por meio da Secretaria Municipal da Cultura e Fundart, continua com a exposição “Arqueologia vai à escola”, realizada em parceria com o GEA (Grupo de Estudos Arqueológicos) da Fundação Araporã. A exposição tem entrada gratuita.

O projeto tem como objetivo despertar o interesse dos alunos do Ensino Fundamental pela Arqueologia e pela experiência do fazer científico. Um de seus objetivos é mostrar que a Arqueologia é uma ciência com teoria, métodos e técnicas próprias e que permite relacionar diversos conhecimentos, proporcionando realizar um trabalho multidisciplinar dentro e fora da sala de aula - e não apenas entender a Arqueologia como um apêndice da História e da Antropologia.

A arqueologia é apresentada como uma ciência que ajuda a compreender a história, baseada na análise da cultura material produzida pelos seres humanos. A ideia é que as ações educacionais do projeto auxiliem na compreensão dos conteúdos escolares, já que colocam em prática o conhecimento aprendido em sala de aula.

Encontro dos povos do Cerrado reivindicará políticas públicas para o manejo sustentável do bioma

Entre os dias 12 e 16 de setembro a Rede Cerrado, em parceria com a Fundação Banco do Brasil, realizará o VII Encontro e Feira dos Povos do Cerrado, no Memorial dos Povos Indígenas em Brasília/DF. Comunidades e organizações da sociedade civil dos 14 estados do Cerrado Brasileiro estarão reunidas para também celebrar o Dia Nacional do Cerrado e os 20 anos da organização.

Na programação do evento estão previstas palestras, mesas redondas, oficinas, audiência pública e outras atividades, além de uma feira de produtos típicos da região e uma intensa programação cultural. Ministros foram convidados para abertura do encontro, e haverá uma passeata pela Esplanada dos Ministérios, o Grito do Cerrado, que será encerrado pela tradicional Corrida de Toras entre etnias indígenas, alertando a sociedade da destruição e importância do bioma cerrado. Ao final será entregue ao governo uma carta política com as denúncias e reivindicações feitas pelas organizações do Cerrado, em busca de mais políticas públicas para a região.

Bruna Cesca Capelete, doutoranda do Programa de Tecnologia Ambiental e Recursos da UnB, é uma das vencedoras do Prêmio Brasil de Engenharia. Sua pesquisa sobre substituição de elementos químicos usados no tratamento de água foi eleita por 25 pesquisadores de universidades do Brasil inteiro como a melhor na categoria “Saneamento e Recursos Hídricos”. O prêmio é uma iniciativa do Sindicato dos Engenheiros do Distrito Federal (Senge-DF) e do Instituto Atenas de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento. “Esse foi o meu primeiro prêmio. Ele serve como um reconhecimento e um incentivo para continuar com as minhas pesquisas”, disse Bruna.

Setembro será dedicado à savana mais rica do planeta, que se encontra em grave processo de degradação

O mês de setembro será todo dedicado à exaltação do cerrado brasileiro, a savana mais rica do planeta. A abertura oficial das comemorações acontece neste sábado (01/09), às 15h, com exposição de fotografias do bioma no Espaço Casa do Visitante do Jardim Botânico de Brasília, parceiro do Ministério do Meio Ambiente na organização deste evento. 

De 12 a 16 de setembro acontece o Encontro dos Povos do Cerrado, no Memorial dos Povos Indígenas, em Brasília, com palestras, exposições e apresentação de filmes e vídeos. O objetivo desses eventos é mobilizar a sociedade e os povos do cerrado para o estímulo de ações voltadas à conservação e ao uso sustentável dos recursos naturais do bioma. É com esta visão que se realizará o VII Encontro e Feira dos Povos do Cerrado.

CONSCIENTIZAÇÃO

A previsão dos organizadores é que o evento reúna cerca de mil representantes de comunidades e organizações da sociedade civil dos 14 estados abrangidos pelo cerrado. O evento terá uma extensa programação com palestras, mesas redondas, oficinas, audiência pública e outras atividades sobre temas relativos à conservação do bioma e à defesa de seus povos, além da feira de produtos sustentáveis desse bioma e de uma intensa programação cultural.

O Instituto Ethos e a Rede Nossa São Paulo, no âmbito do Grupo de Trabalho de Resíduos Sólidos, lançaram nesta quarta-feira (29/8) a publicação Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos: Desafios e Oportunidades para as Empresas. A divulgação do material ocorreu durante o seminário “Resíduos Sólidos e a Cidade: Boas Práticas e Desafios”, realizado na sede da Fecomércio, em São Paulo (SP).

O evento teve por finalidade apresentar as boas práticas que empresas e governos já realizam, bem como discutir os desafios que ainda precisam ser enfrentados pela gestão pública e pela iniciativa privada para efetivar a Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos (PNRS).

A publicação busca contribuir para ampliar o diálogo com as empresas sobre a implantação da PNRS e incentivar novas reflexões acerca do tema.
